The Verge had reported that an internal email was sent to the company’s most valuable professionals (MVP) announcing the decision. The email reportedly said that in light of the challenges presented by COVID-19, Microsoft has been closely monitoring the developing global situation and reassessing its overall in-person event strategy. The email further read, “As a company, Microsoft has made the decision to transition all external and internal events to a digital-first experience through July 2021.”

Notably, Microsoft had already cancelled the in-person event for its developer conference Build 2020. The flagship developer conference was originally set to be held in the United States from May 19 to May 21, 2020. Furthermore, Microsoft has also announced to hold the 2020 edition of ‘Ignite’ in a digital-only format. Ignite is Microsoft’s final major conference of the year for IT professionals and developers which is scheduled for September 2020.
